ABOUT

EXPANSIVE, ENERGETIC and  40-YEARS EPERIENCE ! A Special  Art Retreat BALI 2025

"Unless I am away from my studio I work every day. I don’t wait for inspiration, I go to my easel and find it on a canvas.", said Christine to me, earlier this year, when she was at my home in Bali, painting madly into the night.

Having known Christine for many years an as exceptionally multi-talented artist who has a well-known style, but never ceases pushing her artistic boundaries, I know this statement to be true.

I've seen her in action, and she's a powerhouse of inspiration, whist maintaining a beautiful sense of centeredness whilst she creates ... no prima donna artist stuff here, just real grit and talent making real art. Every day.

If this approach appeals to you, then a week to approach each day in our beautiful studio by the sea in Bali with a new artistic challenge, and plenty of knowledgeable tuition to see you through to the end of your work may be just the ticket!

This is the perfect mid-winter warm getaway to paint in Bali with Christine Hingston and Anna Kwiecinska at Villa Nilaya in beautiful East Bali.

See you there!

This really special 8-day/7-night retreat offers you the opportunity gift yourself gentle days by the sea to focus on expanding your painting skills, knowledge and inspiration

  • Tutoring with Christine Hingston - 33 hours over 6 days in two parts, before and after lunch

  • Cooking'n'Cocktails with our executive chef - cook your own 7-dish megibung with tips and recipes to be able to make it at home - plus our Signature Nilaya cocktails and snacks as you stir the sauce!

  • A stylish night out on the town with fine dining and cocktails

  • Short morning practice with sound and meditation with Anna

  • A 60-minute deliciously restorative Balinese massage or reflexology treat with our expert masseuses using Sensatia's pure sweet almond oil infused with restorative essential oils where you choose your favourite scent - Meditation or Relaxation.

  • A gentle 'de-planing' yoga session followed by a heavenly, live sound-bathing experience (some call it 'sound therapy' or 'healing' - we just call it divine) that will have your senses and imagination floating ...

  • trips to locations for gathering inspiration

  • plus your choice of accommodation and breakfast for 7 nights + airport collection

  • 5 lunches and 4 dinners

  •  A wide variety of good restaurants within easy walking distance of your hotel for other meals, a coffee or time out

  • and time to yourself

  • retreat bag with arty gifts

A luxurious week where all you need do is turn up each day at 9.30 am, after breakfast (and perhaps an early-morning dip? ... the snorkeling is fabulous), having taken the short walk in our pretty village to Villa Nilaya.

Lets' begin with some calm and focusing breathwork and a gentle introduction to gathering us together each morning.

This is led by Anna, who has been introducing participants over the last 3 years of retreats to the A.W.E. technique of 'microdosing mindfulness' ... it's fully integrated into the week, which has as its theme, the chakra flute of 7 colours.

Your painting studio is an airy upstairs terrace beneath the soaring grass roof of Villa Nilaya.

Most materials are provided, and you will be provided with a specific list when you enrol.

Our program includes a Welcome Dinner after a delicious session of gentle de-planing yoga, followed by an indulgent hour of extended shavasana (relaxation) as you experience the sensory pleasures of a healing, sound bath journey by Eva Kroes.

On the three peaceful evenings when there is no after-painting program, you can discover the seaside dining venues in our village of Mendira near Candi Dasa

See the Accommodation - WE RECOMMEND AMARTA BUNGALOWS!

You  can choose where you stay from one of three accommodations - from cute Balinese seafront bungalows  (AMARTA ) to luxe-plus resort suites at the 5-star CANDI BEACH HOTEL RESORT, or a variety of types of rooms at the 4-star SEA BREEZE VILLAS.

All venues have dining facilities if you fancy a night at home.  Your retreat cost INCLUDES  accommodation with breakfast in the retreat price. There is nothing else to pay, except for dinners on the 'free nights' (4 dinners are included).

We really recommend Amarta as they provide a helpful evironment, 8 minutes' walk from the villa and are right on a white sandy beach that is perfect for safe swimming. They're situated close to several good local restaurants (warungs), and have a good  sea-side restaurant of their own.  As value for money goes, this is a great choice, but if you're after something more luxurious, please check in with Anna

Christine and I warmly invite you to join our group in 2025 for this exceptional art experience By The Sea in beautiful East Bali.

A desire to be present in my own mind, my own space and my own dreams allows my hand to interpret.

I look and I look again at shapes, patterns and colours. I look at shadows and light and dark in nature. For me this ability to see what is around me is the greatest gift I can draw on for inspiration in my abstract and representational work.

A lifetime of dreaming has led me to a daily practice of creating.  Always pushing boundaries and experimenting with new techniques and materials.

Not everything works but that is the process of making art, always moving forward and challenging myself.

I work in oil on canvas, acrylic and watercolour on paper.

TEACHERS
MEET CHRISTINE HINGSTON

"Unless I am away from my studio I work every day. I don’t wait for inspiration, I go to my easel and find it on a canvas.

I use many techniques and materials in my paintings including oil and acrylic paint, rust paint and charcoal, gold leaf and collage.

Some paintings happen fast and some take time and are put aside to consider and come back to at a later time.

More recently I have had the opportunity to indulge my passion for ceramics working with stone wear clay and firing in gas and soda and wood fired kilns. I love the way that my painting will inspire my ceramic and the wonderful, sometimes unexpected results in my ceramics that inspire my paintings."

Creative Living Retreats by Anna Kwiecinska

With a background as an art historian and art gallery owner, my collaboration with artists continues to be a fascinating career which evolved into specialist art retreats designed to combine seriously good art tuition with authentic cultural experiences.

The practice of meditation has under-pinned Creative Living Retreats, as a source of focus for creative inspiration.

In 202o Anna was part of a pilot study group led by two reseachers in the bay Area of San Francisco, into the practice of 'microdosing mindfulness' .Dr David Amster a pain management specialist and Jake Eagle, life coach and counsellor, - both meditators - have since published their findings as "The Power of A.W.E', and it is this wisdom that we draw on in recent retreats.

I began this retreat program in 2011 and other than during the pandemic, retreats have happened every year.  Over a decade, many retreatants have returned for our thoughtfully curated weeks of supported creativity, and I genuinely look forward to welcoming you to experience the depth of wellbeing that Creative Living Retreats have become known for, More info

What You'll Do

This week you have plenty of time to play AND get enough solid work time to complete works.

We will be working on large sheets of quality paper and canvas - the same kind and quality that Christine uses in her professional work.

You can roll your artworks and they'll be ready to frame at home.

Here's how Christine describes the, deep-dive days of painting this week:

please note that on one of these days in the first half of the week we will have a half day trip and lunch for on location work.

Painting Day One - The first morning I will do a master class demonstration outlining my techniques and what we will achieve over the next five days of working together. days.

We will make our own mark making tools from feathers, bamboo, old brushes, sticks and later in the week, when we make a visit to local markets we will gather other mark-making materials to incorporate into the next round of works.

On cartridge paper we will use some of these handmade brushes with Indian Ink to create a plein air abstract painting in our beautiful garden

Painting Day Two we will work on water colour paper.

I will demonstrate how I mix colours and each student will have hands on practice with me to do this and create their own palettes and a master 'colour wheel' which they can keep in their studio as ongoing reference. It will be detailed and a long-term reference tool.

In the afternoon we will work on an abstract landscape painting using ink, watercolour, gum Arabic, acrylic paint, collage and gold leaf.

Painting Day Three I will demonstrate a still life composition on water colour paper.

Before we start the piece on water colour paper I will encorage students to draw their composition on cartridge paper as many times as necessary until they are happy with the balance of the composition. Today is about design elements

In the afternoon we will continue to work on the still life painting.

Painting Day Four I will talk about and demonstrate some of the different mediums I use including modeling paste, crackle paste, coarse pumice, verdigris and black gesso.

Working on a black canvas I will demonstrate how to change transparent colours into opaque colours and how to give acrylic paintg volume by adding modeling paste and extra heavy modelling gel medium.

We will use these mediums on a canvas creating an abstract landscape or abstract still life.

I encourage students to work freely and fast and complete this piece without too much over-thinking and second guessing, so as not to lose their spontaneity.

Painting Day Five is a full day for you to paint in the studio, or , if you've been quick, start a new work!

Painting Day Six- consolidate your previous work, and on this last day the studio closes at 1pm, with our closing ceremony, and the remainder of the afternoon is a fee time to explore, relax and rest before we meet you this evening for our exhibition night and party!

There is no limit to the amount of time that you can spend in the studio (Open from 9.30 am to 9 pm)

Loved the whole thing. Food was amazing and plenty of variety. Staff amazing ... I just thought you did the retreat so well. I felt totally satisfied with the way you made it all happen and made us all feel very special. You really were the glue. Very professional.

The exhibition was just so beautifully put together.
