Tee Hardman - artist

Tee is an artist, designer, dancer and architect; curious, complex and playful.

She lives in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) in South Africa with her husband Mark, their 4 cats, 2 dogs and a parrot. She and Mark run a multi-faceted art and design studio together, which includes architectural design, furniture design, graphic design and bread-making.

Since the COVID lockdown, Tee has been teaching art and creativity courses online.

She is an Associate Adjunct Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of the Free State.

Having taught design, drawing and creativity full-time at several universities in South Africa for 26 years, Tee has escaped full-time academia and now facilitates art and creativity retreats for everyone!

She is passionate about nurturing creativity in all forms and her retreats will get you writing, dancing, drawing and painting freely and intuitively

.Her work and her teaching methods are strongly influenced by the philosophies of Zen and Taoism. Drawing on these ways of being in the world and tracing their relations to Western philosophy, psychology and creativity, Tee immersed herself for decades in research on intuition and its role in the creative process. This culminated in a PhD entitled “Creative Intuition: Perspectives from Eastern and Western Philosophy”.

She shows others how to tap into and nurture creative intuition through retreats such as this one. This is how it happens…. • Slow down • Pay attention • Focus on one particular thing • Practise “intelligent mindlessness” - no thinking • Tune into an embodied awareness, including emotions and sensations • Allow your intuitive awareness to flow through you • Express these intuitions as lines, marks, words or other forms of playful creative expression

Tee works in various creative mediums, although she prefers the fluidity and spontaneity of ink and other water-based mediums.

Over the years her work has evolved from representational to abstract intuitive.

She loves to dance on paper and through space. Every painting she makes is an intuitive response to a specific subject, wherein every mark is a response to the marks that have preceded it. Her work evolves over long periods of time through layers of translucent washes, contrasted with fine detail.

Tee has exhibited in several group shows around South Africa.

She loves the human connection that social media brings into her life so, although she lives in a small city at the bottom tip of Africa, her artworks have been bought by people across the world (sometimes even before they’re finished!).

Find her on Instagram as flow__with__t and on Facebook as Flow with t. It is, in fact, through social media, that Tee met Anna!

Tee’s work strikes a chord with most people, as her paintings and drawings are essentially expressions of spirit and universal creative energy, a life force within each of us and which we intuitively recognise.

My recent work

Creative Intuition has been studied extensively by Tee Hardman, and is the subject of her Ph.D.

It informs everything she does as a professional architect, artist, and  arts educator. these are recentl published articles resulting from her research.

Understanding Creative Intuition - an article in UNISA publication "de arte" Vol 46, 2011. Issue 83. Published online 24 May 2017

The creative process is multi-faceted. Whether one is designing a building, composing a piece of music or developing a series of paintings, the process involves both rational and other, less easily explicable, non-rational aspects.

Understanding Creative Intuition - Perspectives from Eastern and Western Philosophy . published online in Journal of Creativity Volume 31, December 2021

This article is an overview of research findings from a PhD by the author in which the nature of creative intuition and how it functions during the creative process is explored. The experience of creative intuition is fragile and fleeting, characterised by moments of mysterious potentiality and open-ended suggestiveness which generate new and original thoughts, sounds, images and actions.
